Home Security

Blog by Patricia Houlihan - Personal Real Estate Corporation | September 19th, 2013

For years Vancouver has been ranked as one of the most livable cities in the world. With its beautiful green spaces, gorgeous waterfront views, and friendly reputation, it is no wonder people flock here from all over the globe. But like any big city, it is always important to keep in mind that not everyone has good intentions. This is why it is wise to properly secure your home.  Here is a list of some initiatives you can take to better protect your home and property.

An Alarm System

They say that the most effective home security measure is installing a professional alarm system…..personally I think a dog is better but that doesn’t’ show up in the research (which may be done by alarm companies rather than the SPCA). Anyhow, not only do these systems protect a home from unwanted intruders, they also act as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  Home security systems are expensive to install. As a result, it is very important that homeowners look for a reputable company before making the jump to a home security system. The options for monitoring also vary as do the costs and the ability to get out of the contract so check these things, particularly if you will be selling as a new owner may not want your alarm monitoring package!

Automatic Flood Lights

Automatic floodlights are an easy cost-effective way to scare off intruders as well as provide better visibility for homeowners in the night. These lights are motion sensored and turn on if an animal or person steps in front of the detector. It is recommended to install floodlights around areas of your property that are either away from the public eye or need better visibility at night, such as a pathway to the front door or basement steps.

Metal Window Bars

Adding metal bars to your ground level and accessible windows is another great way of keeping unwanted visitors out….I think this is a bit extreme but I guess it depends on where you live.

Proper Locks

It’s important to keep your windows and doors equipped with modern and strong locks.  Strong locks or deadbolts are just another security measure you can take if you want to ensure the utmost security for your home.

By following these simple tips, this will allow you to breathe easy knowing you have taken the necessary safety precautions to better protect your home.
