Improve the Look of your Home with Paint

Blog by Patricia Houlihan - Personal Real Estate Corporation | July 17th, 2013

Whether you are trying to sell your home, or just want to give it a fresh face, one way to make a big transformation is to use paint. A new paint job is a great way to accent certain areas of your house as well as give it a clean new look. As the saying goes paint is worth a lot more on the walls than in the can and it is the most cost effective, high return reno you can do! So if you want a good spruce-up this season, here are a few helpful painting tips that are sure to impress your neighbours and friends.

1.     Focus on Highly Visible Areas

It is amazing how much of an impact paint can make to your home. With a bucket of relatively inexpensive paint, you can totally transform the look from faded to friendly. When tackling a new paint job, focus on highly visible areas like your main entrance, kitchen, living room or main hallway. Choose colours that give a punch to the space. This doesn’t necessarily mean bright vibrant colours; choose a paint colour that accents the surrounding space and complements your belongings.

2.     Paint on Wood

The thought of painting on wood makes many west coasters cringe. However, sometimes there is a point when too much wood is just too much wood. Instead, paint trim and kitchen cabinetry in a light colour to give the space a new look. By reducing the amount of wood in the room, this will actually highlight the remaining wood features and give a nice impact to the space.

3. Buyers Don’t Want to Paint

If you are interested in selling your home, a simple coat of paint is a great way to help close the sale. For most homebuyers, they want a house that is move-in ready. By adding a couple of nice furniture pieces to stage your home, in addition to a fresh coat of paint, this can make a big impact for potential homebuyers.

Before embarking on any more major renovations, it is a good idea to speak to a professional REALTOR® like my self.  Some renos can cost a lot with no real return; others can significantly increase sale price.  Vancouver real estate is a competitive market and it is important for you to get the right price for your home.  If you are interested in learning more ways to transform the look of your home or increase the value of your home, please feel free contact me at any time.
